Almond Prunus amygdalus (dulcis)

The almond is a deciduous tree native to the southwest parts of Asia and to northern Africa . This tree does its best when the winters are relatively mild and wet and the summers are hot and dry. Almonds bloom early in the season when the days are short and cool subjecting it to damage by late frosts. Kernels contain vitamin E, Magnesium, Calcium, and contain no cholesterol. Once established almonds can exhibit drought tolerance, but it is important to give trees adequate moisture in the fall when next years buds are developing. Some almonds we sell are not self-fertile requiring other selections nearby to successfully bear fruit. Bees are the only known pollinators of almonds. What follows are descriptions of the selections we sell.

'All-in-One' - This selection is a better choice for the home gardener because of its self-fertile nature and smaller mature size (about 15'). Tree blooms in mid-season and produces a medium to large size nut that ripens in September. The kernel is soft-shelled and sweet tasting. Tree needs approximately 400-500 chill hours. semi-dwarf

'Garden Prince' - This self-fertile selection reaches 15' high making it well suited for smaller spaces. Tree blooms in mid-season and produces a medium size nut that ripens in early October. The kernel has a good taste and has a well sealed soft shell. Tree needs approximately 250-350 chill hours making it better suited to warmer climates. semi-dwarf

'Mission' (' Texas ') - This late blooming almond is well suited for areas of late spring frosts. The nut ripens in late October. Kernels are short, have a hard shell and a slightly bitter taste preferred by some. Use 'Nonpareil' or 'Ne Plus Ultra' as pollinators. Tree needs approximately 500-600 hours. standard

'Ne Plus Ultra' - This is an early blooming selection of almond that produces a large, long nut that ripens in late September. The kernel has a sweet taste with a soft shell. Use 'Nonpareil' as a pollinator. This tree works great as a pollinator for other varieties. Tree needs approximately 250-350 chill hours making it better suited to warmer climates. standard

'Nonpareil' - This almond blooms in mid-season and produces a medium to large nut that ripens in early September. The kernel is easily shelled by hand. This is the most commonly used selection in commercial orchards. We recommend using 'All-in-One', 'Ne Plus Ultra', or ' Mission ' as a pollinator. Tree needs approximately 400 chill hours. standard
