Apple Malus pumila (domestica)
Apples are native to southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia , but now are one of the most widely adapted deciduous fruit trees. Most selections produce little fruit if a pollinator is not used. The fruit is fat-free, cholesterol-free and is a good source of fiber. What follows are descriptions of the selections we sell.
'Adina' - Large size apples of this selection are roughly round in shape and red in color with the occasional lighter stripe. Flesh is firm, crisp and has a slight taste of cinnamon. The 'Adina' Apple originated in Australia . This selection ripens in June to early July. Tree needs approximately 200-300 chill hours. standard
'Anna' - Because of the low chill hours required by this selection it does well in warmer climates. Large fruit has a pale green cast to it. Flesh is crisp and sweet. Use 'Dorsett Golden' or 'Ein Shemer' as pollinators. The 'Anna' Apple originated in Israel and was introduced to the U.S. in 1965. This selection ripens in June. 'Beverly Hills' - This is a low chill selection well suited for warmer climates. Small to medium size fruit has a yellow skin with the occasional red streak. Flesh is tender and juicy. One of the best Apples for planting on the coast. ' Beverly Hills ' Apple originated in Los Angeles and was introduced in 1945. This selection ripens in June to early August. 'Braeburn' - This selection produces medium to large size fruit green in color with a red blush. Flesh is firm, crisp and juicy. This tree tends to be a heavy producer and may produce two crops in one year. 'Braeburn' Apple originated in New Zealand . This selection ripens in late October to early November. 'Dorsett Golden' - This selection originated in the Bahamas making it well suited to those climates that have more mild winters. Medium to large fruit is yellow in color with a slightly red blush. Flesh is firm, crisp and juicy with a sweet flavor. Use 'Anna' or 'Ein Shemer' as pollinators. This selection ripens in late June to early July. 'Ein Shemer' - This is a low chill selection from Israel suitable for planting in areas with warm winters. Medium size fruit is greenish yellow in color. Flesh is juicy and crisp with mild acidity. Use 'Anna' or 'Dorsett Golden' as pollinators. This selection ripens in late June to early July. Tree needs approximately 150-250 chill hours. standard
' Fuji ' - The medium size fruit of this selection is red to yellow in color often with a blush. Flesh is very juicy and extremely sweet tasting, very high sugar content and very low acid content. 'Gala' - Medium size fruit of this selection is colored golden yellow with a reddish cast. Flesh is yellow in color, crisp and exceptionally sweet. This selection ripens in August to early September. Tree needs approximately 500-600 chill hours. semi-dwarf and standard
'Garden Delicious' - This is a genetic dwarf apple that only reaches 6-8' tall with an equal spread. Medium to large size fruit is green in color with a red blush. Flesh is crisp and sweet. This selection ripens in late September. Tree needs approximately 550-600 chill hours. genetic dwarf
'Gordon' - This is a good selection for southern California . Fruit is medium to large in size with green color and a red blush. Flesh is firm, crisp and sweet. This selection ripens in mid-August to September. Tree needs approximately 300-400 chill hours. semi-dwarf and standard
'Granny Smith' - The large fruit of this apple is bright green in color with a slight pink blush. White flesh is firm, crisp and very tart. This selection ripens in August to September. Tree needs approximately 500-600 chill hours. semi-dwarf and standard
'Gravenstein' - This tree produces large yellowish-green fruit with red stripes. Aromatic flesh is crisp and juicy. Pollen is sterile requiring a pollinator to produce any fruit. 'Jonathan' - Medium size fruit produced by this tree is yellow with bright red stripes. Flesh is firm but very tender and juicy with a slight tartness. This selection ripens late October to December. Tree needs approximately 700-800 chill hours. semi-dwarf and standard
'Mutsu' - This a very large green apple with a golden yellow blush. Flesh is very juicy and very flavorful, one of the better tasting apples. Pollen is sterile requiring a pollinator to produce any fruit. Use ' Fuji ', 'Granny Smith', or 'Red Delicious' as pollinators. This selection ripens in late October to March. 'Red Delicious' - This is the most widely grow Apple in the world. The large size fruit of this selection is a deep red color. Flesh is firm, juicy and crisp. Use 'Granny Smith' or 'Yellow Delicious' as pollinators to produce a heavier crop. This selection ripens in late September to October. 'Sekai Ichi' - This is a new selection of apple from Japan where the name means "world's # 1". This is the result of a cross between 'Red Delicious' and 'Yellow Delicious' apples. Fruit is very large and can reach up to 2 pounds. Flesh is crisp, sweet and very, very juicy. This selection ripens in September to October. 'Tropical Beauty' - This selection, originally from South Africa , produces a medium to large size bright red fruit. Flesh is crisp and has a mild, sweet taste. Use 'Adina' or 'Ein Shemer' as pollinators to produce a heavier crop. This selection ripens in July. Tree needs approximately 350-400 chill hours. standard
'Winesap' - The medium size apple produced by this selection is red in color with lighter colored spots over the skin. Flesh is yellow in color, coarse in texture and has a slightly tart taste to it.
