Cherry (sweet and sour) Prunus avium and cerasus
Origins of this deciduous tree are uncertain, but it has now naturalized in large portions of North America . Cherries are low in calories, have no fat, and are high in potassium, vitamin B and vitamin C. Where reliable production in desired a pollinator should be used. It is said that only sour cherries will pollinate other sour cherries, and that sweet cherries will only pollinate sweet cherries, so be careful which pollinator you choose. What follows are descriptions of the selections we sell.
'Bing' - This is the most popular cherry of them all. A large size fruit with dark red skin. The flesh is purple in color and has a rich, sweet taste. Use 'Black Tartarian', 'Stella', or 'Van' as pollinators. This selection is not compatible with 'Royal Ann'. This selection ripens in mid to late June. 'Black Tartarian' - This tree produces a large fruit that is dark purple, almost black, in color. Fruit is juicy and slightly tart. Use any other sweet cherry as a pollinator to produce a more reliable crop. This selection ripens in early to mid June. Tree needs approximately 700-800 chill hours. semi-dwarf and standard
'Lapins' - This is a large cherry that is dark red in color. Flesh is purple in color, firm and sweet tasting. This is a selection is considered self-fertile and works well as a pollinator for other sweet cherries. This selection ripens in late June. Tree needs approximately 800-900 chill hours. semi-dwarf and standard
'Royal Ann' - The large fruit produced by this selection has yellow colored skin with a slight red blush. Flesh is slightly yellow in color and very sweet with a creamy texture. Use 'Black Tartian' or 'Van' as pollinators. This selection is not compatible with 'Bing'. This selection ripens in early June. Tree needs approximately 700-800 chill hours. standard
'Stella' - This large fruit is dark red, almost black in color. Flesh is dark red in color and is firm in texture with a sweet flavor. This selection is considered self-fertile and ripens in mid-June. Tree needs approximately 500-600 chill hours. semi-dwarf and standard
'Van' - This selection produces a medium to large size similar to 'Bing' but slightly smaller. Flesh is dark red in color and has a semi-sweet taste. 'English Morello' - This is an excellent cooking cherry. The fruit of this sour cherry is medium in size and is deep red in color. Flesh is dark red with a soft texture. This selection ripens in late July. Tree needs approximately 300-400 chill hours. standard
'Montmorency' - This is the standard cherry in the U.S. The fruit of this sour cherry is medium to large in size with a bright red skin. Stone-free flesh is yellow in color, tart and very soft. This selection ripens in July. Tree needs approximately 700-800 chill hours. standard
