Fig Ficus carica
Figs are one of the oldest recorded fruits in human history. They are native to western Asia and northeast Africa . Figs were brought into California by the Spanish missionaries in 1759 a.d. Figs are fat-free, sodium-free, and an excellent source of fiber. Most of the selections we sell will bear two crops in one year. Figs are self-fertile and as such produce heavy crops each year. What follows are descriptions of the selections that we sell.
'Black Jack' - This tree produces a slightly flattened, large to very large purple brown fig. Flesh is light pink in color and has a sweet flavor. Tree is fairly hardy and matures to a smaller size than other figs. This selection ripens in August to November. Tree needs approximately 100 chill hours.
'Black Mission ' - This is the most common and most popular selection of fig. A large fig with dark purple almost black skin. Flesh is pink in color and has a great fig flavor. This is a heavy bearing tree. This selection ripens in August to November. Tree needs approximately 100 chill hours.
'Celestial' - This selection produces a small to medium size fig with light brown skin. The flesh is violet in color. Pulp is strawberry in color, firm, and juicy. This is the most hardy selection of fig we grow. This selection ripens in August to November. Tree needs approximately 100 chill hours.
'Conadria' - The medium to large size fig produced by this tree has yellow to light green colored skin. Flesh is strawberry in color and has a rich flavor. This is a good tree for hot areas. This selection ripens in August to November. Tree needs approximately 100 chill hours.
'Improved Brown Turkey' - This selection produces a large to very large fig with dark purple skin. Flesh is light pink in color and has a sweet flavor. This tree does well throughout California from the coast to inland locations. This selection ripens in late August to November. Tree needs approximately 100 chill hours.
'Kadota' - This is a medium size fig with light yellow skin. Flesh is rich, sweet and golden in color. This selection ripens in August to November. Tree needs approximately 100 chill hours.
'Osborne Prolific' - This selection is a heavy bearer that does very well in southern California , even near the coast. This is a medium size fig with reddish brown skin. Flesh is amber color tinged with pink and is sweet tasting. This selection ripens in late August to November. Tree needs approximately 100 chill hours.
' Texas Everbearing' - This is a small to medium size fruit that has dark purple colored skin. Flesh is very sweet. Tree does well in higher elevations where a shorter growing season often limits others. This selection ripens in August to November. Tree needs approximately 100 chill hours.
'White Genoa' - The medium to large size fig produced by this selection has light yellow, thin skin. Flesh is white with a pink tinge, and has few seeds. This selection ripens in August to November. Tree needs approximately 100 chill hours.
