Peach Prunus persica

Peaches are deciduous trees that are native to China . Peaches and nectarines are the same except for some minor differences. Peaches tend to be larger that nectarines and have a fuzz on their skin. The fruit is separated into three types. In freestone peaches the flesh pulls away from the pit. These are the most favorite varieties for eating fresh. Clingstone peaches have flesh that sticks to the pit. It is said that these are the best varieties for canning and cooking since the flesh tends to be a bit firmer. Semi-freestone peaches fall in the middle of the previous two designations. Generally peaches prefer warm and dry springs, and long summers with high temperatures, though there are varieties that are widely adapted. They do require a certain amount of chill hours for successful fruit set, but that varies by selection. Most all peaches are self-fertile except where noted.
