Pecan Carya illinoensis

The pecan is native to the Central and Eastern United States . A massive tree that can reach 70' high with an equal spread. Related to the Walnut, Pecans have similar fruit that is enclosed in a husk that should be removed soon after the nuts fall from the tree. Better Pecan production is achieved where the summers are hot. Most trees will set some fruit, which may be enough for homeowners, but where reliable production is desired a pollinator should be used. What follows are descriptions of the varieties we sell.

' Cheyenne ' - A smaller size tree that produces a nut of good quality. Kernels are round, golden yellow in color and easily shelled from their husks. Tree is very productive and starts to bear at an early age. This selection shows good resistance to disease.

'Choctaw' - Kernels of this selection are large and tasty. Tree starts to bear after 6 years. This selection shows good resistance to disease.

'Desirable' - A leading commercial selection in the southeast. This tree produces nuts regularly each year which makes it a favorite. Use 'Kiowa' as a pollinator. Tree starts to bear after 8 years.

'Kiowa' - A regular producing Pecan that has good quality kernels. Use 'Desirable' as a pollinator. Tree starts to bear after 6 years.

'Mahan' - A heavy producing Pecan that has large kernels with shells that are easily removed. A late maturing selection that does better in low desert areas of the country.

'Mohawk'
- This tree produces a large nut with a fine tasting kernel. Use 'Pawnee' as a pollinator. Tree starts to bear after 6 years.

'Pawnee' - An early ripening selection that can be used in areas where others don't ripen because of a lack of heat. Use 'Mohawk' as a pollinator. Tree start to bear after 7 years. This selection does well in coastal areas.

'Western Schley' - This is an easily grown Pecan that can tolerate a wider range of growing conditions. This selection produces medium size nuts with a thin shell. Kernels have a very good taste.

' Wichita ' - Medium to large size kernel has a good quality taste. Tree starts to bear at an early age. This selection can be stored both in the shell and out of the shell.
