Arbutus

Arbutus menziesii MADRONE
This California native is very tough and can exhibit drought tolerance once established. The Madrone is slow growing evergreen tree that normally reaches 20-30'high and wide, but may reach 60-70' if given time and ideal condidtions. Attractive leaves measure 3-6 inches long and are leathery to the touch. Numerous bell-shaped flowers cover the tree in the spring and give way to small berries that turn from green to red to yellow. Bark is a beautiful shade of red and peels from the trunk in sheets each year. USDA: 7-9 Sunset: 4-7, 14-19

Arbutus unedo STRAWBERRY TREE

Strawberry Tree will keep your attention all year long with its interesting characteristics. This is an evergreen large shrub to medium size tree that reaches 20-25' high and has an equal spread. Leaves measure 3 inches long and have red stems that compliment the dark red bark on the trunk. Urn-shaped, pink to white flowers appear in late fall and give way to "strawberries" that turn from green to red to yellow. Because of its slower growth this tree is a great choice for today's smaller properties. USDA: 7-9 Sunset: 4-24, 31

Arbutus unedo ' Marina ' MARINA STRAWBERRY TREE
A selection of A. unedo that has larger leaves and pink colored flowers. This is an evergreen tree that can reach 25-30' high with equal spread. The crown takes on a more rounded form than its parent. The bark is a deep red color and peels off of the trunk as it increases in size. A great choice for raised planters. USDA: 7-9 Sunset: 8, 9, 14-24
